Idols are almost like american celebrities and singers only they have to be perfect in every visible way. They are the heart of South Korean Pop-culture and K-pop music. Record companies often will hold auditions where several hundreds of citizens attend and try out to become a K-pop artist. The process is lengthy and difficult but the outcome is admiration from all, and the money to do what ever you want with.
Most Idols start auditions when they are around the ages of nine or ten which is a very early age to start a lifelong career. If the wanna-be idols pass all of the several auditions and tests they will have to sign a contract with a record company. The hardships do not stop though, as the young idols will sometimes have to attend school all the way through college, while living with a dance and vocal trainer in the evening. Idols need to be in top physical shape so most of them have a personal trainer assigned to them specifically or a trainer that works for the company as a whole.
In most instances idols are singers who often set dancing trends and fashion fads. All members of one group may have similar looking outfits with different inspirations for each of the designs. Most, if not all music videos for South Korean songs have a unique dance and they are set big trends for the general population.
Most K-pop artists wear a lot of makeup and eye liner, even the male artists. Plastic surgery is sometimes recommended for artists when they get to their early or mid twenties because it is hard to judge what a ten year-old kid will look like when they grow up. It is a nessesity to look perfect when you are an idol in South Korea because that's in the job description.
Idols don't lead easy lives. They don't just get to bask in the glory of being famous, it's an actual career that is difficult to do every single day as it requires a lot of physical exertion and preparation. Sometimes we need to remember that famous people aren't objects to idolize, but that they have a personal life and feelings as well. They are human too and all humans are flawed in some way
